Snyder Administration Once Again Violates Campaign Finance Laws
MDP Files Complaint After Second Recent Violation

LANSING – The Michigan Democratic Party today filed a complaint with the Department of State against the Rick Snyder administration for violating Michigan’s campaign finance laws. It marks the second violation by the administration in the past few weeks.

On July 28, 2011, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development posted on its taxpayer-funded website, a link to the facebook page of “Rick Snyder for Michigan” – the candidate committee of Governor Rick Snyder. A screenshot of the violation is attached. The posting has since been removed. According to the Secretary of State, “Rick Snyder for Michigan” is an active candidate committee.

“Does this administration think it’s above the law?,” Michigan Democratic Party Chair Mark Brewer asked. “First we have Governor’s Snyder’s staffer sending fundraising emails with state resources, and now we have a state department promoting a campaign website. What’s next, opening up a campaign headquarters in the Romney Building?”

“The Department of State needs to take these violations seriously and thoroughly investigate,” added Brewer. “Blatant violations of campaign finance laws will not be tolerated by the people of Michigan. This administration may want to think about a quick refresher course when it comes to Michigan law.”

Last month, Snyder’s office admitted to violating the law by sending out a fundraising email for the Grand Traverse County Republican Party. A spokesperson for Governor Snyder called the violation, “a serious lack of judgment.” A copy of the most recent complaint is attached.

Republican Michigan Supreme Court: More Anti-Victim, Pro-Insurance Company, Pro-Employer Rulings
Court Far From Being Fair and Impartial, Voters Deserve Better

LANSING – The Republican-controlled Michigan Supreme Court ended its term last week with more anti-victim, pro-insurance company, pro-employer rulings.

“This is all the people of Michigan need to know about the Republican Supreme Court: victims of all kinds – car accidents, medical malpractice, and employment discrimination – lose, while insurance companies, big corporations, and employers win,” Michigan Democratic Party Chair Mark Brewer said. “This is not the fair and impartial Supreme Court the people of Michigan expect and deserve.”

Late last week, the Supreme Court ruled that an employer is not responsible for a rape in the workplace (Hamed v. Wayne County), denied medical treatment to a car accident victim paralyzed from the chest down (Krohn v. Home Owners Insurance Co.), and dismissed on a technicality a medical malpractice case on behalf of a patient who died after surgery (Ligons v. Crittenton Hospital).

As Government Completes Sale of Chrysler Stake, Michigan Democratic Party Chair Mark Brewer Applauds the Decisive Action Of President Obama to Save Michigan Jobs

LANSING— The federal government completed the sale of its stake in Chrysler Thursday, marking the conclusion of a successful effort to rescue an industry responsible for the employment of more than 2.5 million American workers. The American auto industry has recovered and is profiting thanks to the bold decision President Obama made to offer assistance to the auto industry with strings attached to protect taxpayers. to His action ensured that those employed at General Motors, Chrysler and at their dependent suppliers had jobs to support their families.

“Communities here in Michigan like Warren, Detroit, and Sterling Heights have been saved from certain disaster because the President took action. Barack Obama and Michigan Democrats made the tough choice to step in to ensure that Chrysler could weather the economic crisis. And Chrysler not only survived, it’s profiting and hiring again.” said Michigan Democratic Party Chair Mark Brewer.

The President made available assistance, but it came with strings attached, including management changes, to protect taxpayers. After emerging from structured bankruptcy reorganization, Chrysler and General Motors are both hiring again and operating at a profit.

In May, Chrysler repaid $5.9 billion in loans and interest to the U.S. government and American taxpayers. It also made its first quarterly profit since emerging from structured bankruptcy reorganization, and first quarterly profit overall since 2006. Chrysler posted a 30% increase in sales in June compared to the same month in 2010, marking a remarkable turnaround for Chrysler and the domestic auto industry.

Whitmer: Republicans Choose New York Bond Agencies Over Michigan’s Kids

Lansing – Today, Senate Democratic Leader Gretchen Whitmer (D-East Lansing) gave a scathing response to Republican leadership as they have begun to backtrack on a deal that called for additional surplus revenues to be directed to K-12 education. Whitmer challenged Republican Senators to end the political games being played at the expense of Michigan’s school children and send their leadership’s plans back to the drawing board by voting against “immediate effect” when the budget comes back for final adoption.

“Last week I had an understanding with Republican leadership on using some of the Revenue Estimating Conference surplus to mitigate the Governor’s attack on school funding. However, this week everyone seems to have amnesia,” said Whitmer. “It only takes one of the seven Republicans who voted against the K-12 budget to stand up for their school kids, their constituents, and their property owners and stop these cuts from happening.”

Whitmer criticized Governor Snyder’s announcement this morning of a delegation he plans to lead to meet with bond agency executives, saying that the Governor is more interested in currying favor with Wall Street bankers than ensuring Michigan children receive a quality education.

“Perhaps it is fitting that the CEO Governor is more eager to meet with Wall Street executives than the teachers, principals and schools he’s defunding,” added Whitmer. “He’s raiding the education money that the people of Michigan specifically voted to set aside to ensure our schools were funded, all to pay for a $1.8 billion corporate tax break that even he acknowledges might not create a single job.”
